Sticks and Stones

今、『Sticks and Stones』という、いじめの本を読んでいるのですが、

そもそも『Sticks and Stones』とは、どういう意味なのか分かりませんでした。

そこで、wikipediaで調べてみたところ、
（ホント、今の世の中、便利ですね！）
子供向けの短い詩歌（children's rhyme）の一つだそうで、
Sticks and stones will break my bones
But words will never harm me.
または、
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But names will never hurt me.
の出だしの部分で、
要するに、悪口など言われても気にするな、
という意味だそうです。

このwikipediaのエントリーの最後に、

とあり、
コモン・ローの「civil assault」（民事上の脅迫・暴行罪）においては、
身体的暴力の恐怖を与えない限り、
単なる悪口は訴因とはならない、
という概念に繋がるそうです。

コモン・ローは、制定法よりも、
その国の文化・価値観とより密接に繋がっているので、
こういう点は面白いと思います。
